FAQs
What does the interview process entail?
Here at RMI, we are dedicated to providing you a positive interview experience. This means we are committed to transparency, timely updates, and sharing our mission critical work with you throughout our hiring process.
During our interview process, you will get a clear sense of the role and our culture, meet your potential teammates, and learn how you are empowered to make an impact. The process will take 4–8 weeks, depending on the position. The roles you see posted are for immediate hires unless otherwise noted.
We are committed to:
- An interview process with flexibility in mind.
- Ensuring that you get to know us too. You’ll meet your potential manager, teammates, and cross-functional collaborators.
- Having you feel respected and heard. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is always top of mind.
- Keeping you in the know. You’ll be provided with regular updates from our Talent Acquisition team.
The outline below is our standard interview process. This process deviates depending on the needs of the role.
1. Application

We spend time reviewing each and every resume and cover letter that we receive, so be sure to call out why you want to come join us. At RMI, we know we’re stronger together when we embrace different perspectives, backgrounds, experiences, and identities. We encourage individuals of underrepresented groups to apply.
2. Recruiter or Hiring Team Interview
This is a time for us to get to know you and for you to learn more about us. Our Talent Acquisition team will reach out to schedule time to discuss the role and your interest in RMI and to communicate detailed process expectations.
3. Take Home Assignment
Depending on the job, you may receive a take-home exercise to complete. This could be an assessment, a sample project/case study, or in some cases, building a PowerPoint to present in your next interview. These assignments help us to assess skills such as job-specific competencies, analytical and structured thinking ability, creativity, insightfulness, communication and presentation of ideas.
4. In-Depth Interviews
This is your opportunity to meet with the hiring manager, future colleagues, and potentially an executive from your department. The types of interview questions you may be asked range from behavioral-based to case study. With case study questions, we evaluate how you think through and approach solving problems. Does RMI sponsor visas?
We support visa sponsorship for qualified candidates. The timeline can vary depending on specific visa and immigration needs, and your Talent Acquisition representative will assist with any questions along the way.
RMI is home to a highly skilled global team from a variety of countries, all working toward a common goal—to transform the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all.
Does RMI allow remote and/or hybrid work?
Yes! We are a remote-ready company with team members working around the globe. Some of us prefer to work from an RMI office most days. Some of us don’t live anywhere near an office, so we telework full-time. We have the flexibility to work and live anywhere in the continental United States that suits us.
You are welcome to work from an RMI office if you live or will be traveling near one of our office locations. Our US offices are in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado; and Basalt, Colorado.
While many of us work from home, we love having opportunities to see each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. You should expect to travel occasionally for in-person meetings (and, of course, we cover travel costs).
Some roles may require you to be based near an office or to travel more often. If this is the case, it will be discussed during the hiring process.
Does RMI offer professional development opportunities?
Learning is core to our work at RMI. We are committed to providing you with opportunities to learn and grow with classes, an external learning stipend, and mentorship connections. Whether you want to learn public speaking, people leadership, Python, or something in between—we make it possible.
